I want a tattoo by Te Rangitu Netana is a facebook group I've created to promote my mate Te Rangitu's visit to the UK.

International award winning Maori tattooist Te Rangitu Netana is coming to the UK for the summer. He will be booking work whilst he is in the country. Currently available 16th - 30th August in Coilchester, Essex.

Maori Ta Moko Artist Te Rangitu Netana has been involved in the production and promotion of Ta Moko work within his own and other tribes for over 17 years, and has travelled extensively throughout the last few years. Born in Whangarei and raised in Kaikohe, he has now returned to the Far North to work amongst his own people. He is currently working on the formation of an Artist Collective to represent Tai Tokerau, and works from his home in Waipapa, Bay of Islands.

Te Rangitu has a distinctive style, recognised for its detail, flow, and fine lines. His artwork creates a relationship between the patterns as symbols of the wearer’s tupuna complementing the muscle structure of the body, and the wearer’s responsibility to be faithful to his tupuna in the way he holds himself within the protocols and day to day life of our people.

Te Rangitu uses alot of fine, intricate patterns. From a distance you appreciate the overall shape, but it isn’t until the wearer lets the person into his or her personal space, that you also meet the detail of the person within the intricate work. He tries to capture his vision of Ta Moko through symbolism that can be read; therefore teaching and retaining knowledge passed down.

Te Rangitu works within contemporary and traditional styles; however it is an ongoing struggle to define what is contemporary and what is traditional. He believes that to receive Ta Moko in this modern time is like folding time in half, invoking the past spirits and knowledge forward to the now, and being no longer separated from our tupuna by time.

Another blog post on the same day? Yes. I'm on an audio mission, dusting off old hard drive and rediscovering sacred ancient mixes from the Da Shaman dynasty. This beauty here may not be the tightest, but it does have some of my all time favourite tunes. A real breakbeat vibe with hints of dirty two step (proto-dubstep). It was knocked up in a hurry for a Maori friend who was heading back home the following day and comprises of tunes we were constantly listening to at the time. Let me know what you think.

magus - hyperstition 2009

Here is some photographic documentation of the immersive installation 'hyperstition' that Magus, the art collective that Paul John Murphy and I run, created in Colchester at the beginning of October. The audience were invited in small groups, approached the entrance through the underground loading bay at the rear of the property, given torches and permitted half an hour to explore the setting.

Well, after such an intense Samhain and full moon, the spirits and ghosts of the past have certainly made themselves felt. This thinning of the barrier between the conscious and 'other than' conscious mind has led to some amazing personal revelations.

So, whilst I nurture the positive implications of soul baring, I bring you the Cradle of Filth video I directed this year. A befitting closure to this weekend.

My silent b/w 16mm film I directed at university, playing with genre and music. My gosh what existential symbolism, ..........blaaaah. It riffs David Lynch and John Woo to some effect and allowed me to play with the basics of storytelling and cinematic form. It's a pity that the crappy film to video transfer was so poor, as this makes several scenes almost too dark to watch. Big up Ed and James of Los Paranoias for the soundtrack

A supernatural chiller, shot on location in and around Ipswich (Suffolk), about the local legend of Black Shuck, the large ghost hound.

This film is an experiment within filmmaking, using improvisation and plot outline without a script, two key crew, a mix of actors and non-actors and no lighting or grip equipment. The result is a post dogme digital short challenging the notions of fictional and factual narrative convention.
